Fig 1. interpretation of card (author's own)
I also visited the 'Building Memories: The Art of Remembering' exhibition where I came across a set of eye catching die-cut cards. They portray the idea of home, where everyday routine happens. Physical familiarities; such as the way the floor creaks, the smell of the kitchen, the specific angle you have to hold the remote control in order for the channel to change, the photo frames that never stand up on the desk, these are all examples of what makes a home an effective memory palace. A memory palace is a space that exists inside your head without you having to think about it. This is the unconscious playing its part. I interpreted one of the die-cut cards in my sketchbook, as a person who loves colour, this was the one that stood out for me the most. It is part of a collection named 'Home'- 2011 produced by Jonathan Ward and others. It is fascinating how simple scribbles could create such a vivid image.
