The Future is Here

Fig 1. the entrance (author's own)

I visited this exhibition on 29/08/2013. I found that not only was it a design exhibition, but it was a tour within history. I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the exhibition as a whole but certain sections of it stood out for me. An example of one would be the worry behind the effects of digital manufacturing methods along with online marketplaces, open source design and social networking. It seems that these are making old factories redundant,  and the boundaries between designer, user and maker are slowly becoming blurred.

While at the exhibition I read a section on Karl Marx, and it states that he suggested, 'those who control the means of production control political power' therefore traditional manufacturing power bases will be challenged by these new digital manufacturing methods.

I also took note of the important dates in history that stood out for me and created a timeline in my sketchbook. Along with the photos I took, I also produced a page of (very) rough sketches of the designs that were set out for us to see.
