This is a sketch of two sections of Ellen Gallagher's piece 'Odalisque' (2005). The piece is based on Man Ray's photograph of Henri Matisse sketching a model in the harem. Matisse has been replaced by Freud and the model by Gallagher. An unusual combination of people, on one side you have Gallagher herself, an artist who involves herself and her work in racial issues, the influences of mass media, politics and history and on the other side you have the creator of psychoanalysis and the theory of dreams. Interesting.
